Atabek Jafari, director general of the West Azerbaijan regional water company, told reporters:
“This year, a total of 323 million cubic meters of water was released from the dams of Western Azerbaijan to revive Lake Urmu.”
According to him, this amount of water was released from the Barikendi, Shahar-Chay and Zola dams.
In addition, 248 million cubic meters of drinking water and 506 million cubic meters of agricultural water were allocated from the walls of Western Azerbaijan. Currently, the water stored behind the walls is 1 billion 120 million cubic meters.
According to him, the average daily rainfall in western Azerbaijan is about 1.4 millimeters. precipitation is 27 percent lower than last year and 6 percent higher than in the long run.
It should be noted that although Jafari proudly mentioned the release of water from the dams in the name of reviving Lake Urmu, these dams played the most important role in disrupting the ecosystem of the region. According to experts, these barriers were the first reason for the drying of the lake.
